A REPORT ON HIRIYARA JAATRE
Over 426 seniors from various old age homes gathered under one roof at the “Hiriyara Jaatre – a fest for elders” organized by the V the Volunteers – NGO and supported by New Horizon College of Engineering on 16th April 2023, at NHCE Campus.
The volunteers intend to promote community and connection among the older residents by inviting them from different old-age homes where they will get a great chance to meet new people, exchange stories, play games with them, see cultural performances and develop enduring memories at Hiriyara Jaatre.
The event started at 8 AM, the senior citizens were given a traditional welcome by Dollu Kunitha dance show, and Volunteers had prepared a beautiful photo booth to welcome the elders. The elderly took turns taking group photos. The first half of the event was fun activities for elders at an open area of the campus, where they had competitions like Singing, Rangoli, Pot Making, Painting etc., along with this, they got to talk to other elders, share experiences, play games with them. And the second half of the event had some great cultural performances by the elderly in auditorium, where they showcased their talents, like fashion show, singing and dance skills.
The volunteers planned this gathering for elders with the objective that senior citizens deserved to be treated with respect and kindness. And they need to be stimulated mentally, physically, and socially to maintain their health and to avoid depression and isolation.
Hiriyara Jaatre provided them an outdoor platform for interacting with other senior citizens in a safe environment and both the elders and volunteers had a fun filled day and satisfying day.
The event was a huge success, and all the people from old aged homes felt happy, showered with loads of love and blessings. The event was a great opportunity for the NHCE student volunteers to serve the elderly and bring smiles to their faces. NHCE is proud to have been a part of such an initiative and would like to thank VTVO and all the volunteers who made this event a success. We hope to continue our efforts towards serving society in the future as well.
