Transitioning from life as a student to a job in the industry – Opportunities and Challenges
The Alumni Association organized a talk for the AIML students on 17th March 2023 at 9:30 am. The topic was on “Transitioning from life as a student to a job in the industry – Opportunities and Challenges” by Mr. Abhinava Sadasivarao, Senior Software Engineer – NVIDIA & Alumni of NHCE (Batch – 2005).
Mr. Abhinava lauded college graduation and getting the first job as great achievements. However, he highlighted the key nuances of the transition from college life to a professional environment. Students are bound to encounter challenges in the transition. During this period a student ought to learn to build good work ethics-being accountable, keeping up with deadlines, honestly executing assigned work, ensuring transparency, and owning up when at fault.
In the working world, the atmosphere and setting are a lot more formal and professional. The first job will test one’s ability to be a team player, to collaborate with individuals from different cultures and backgrounds, to interact with diverse personalities, and to work on projects with strict deadlines. Staying organized and managing time will be critical. Students have to develop these skills in college.
He also shared tips on how to overcome initial job challenges:
• Create your own sense of structure
• Readjust your expectations
• Master self-motivation and will power
• Give yourself realistic time frames
• Use the time to explore
• Accept that everything is going to change
The session concluded with students taking away insightful ideas on the transition from student life to the professional world.
